竹富島の暮らし
Taketomijima is surrounded by the beautiful coral reefs of Sekisei Lagoon.
Taketomijima sits within the coral reefs of Sekisei Lagoon, designated a national park in 1972. The island's three villages earned National Important Preservation District status in 1987, protecting a townscape of low stone walls, red-tiled roofs, and unpaved lanes. The Tanadui festival is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and locally woven Yaeyama Jofu and Minsaa textiles are recognized traditional crafts. The community actively trains younger generations in music, theater, and craft so that these traditions remain living practice rather than museum pieces.
