Overview
Island designated National Treasure for unique plant life found nowhere else in Japan, with picturesque clifftop shrine.
Connected to the mainland by a 387-meter bridge stretching over Mikawa Bay, Takeshima is a tiny island classified as a natural monument for its unusually dense subtropical plant life, over 200 species thrive here despite the temperate latitude. At the island's center sits Yaotomi Shrine, a popular spot for prayers of good fortune and matchmaking. The walk around the island's perimeter takes only about 30 minutes and offers views of Gamagori's coastline. Visit at low tide when the bridge walkway feels especially dramatic against the exposed tidal flats.
