Innovative and interactive displays at the Takeshima Aquarium provide insight into the rich sea life of Mikawa Bay as well as the deep waters farther out in the Pacific Ocean.
Takeshima Aquarium in Gamagori focuses on the sea life of Mikawa Bay and the deeper Pacific waters beyond. Around 140 deep-sea species are on display, many caught incidentally by local fishing vessels, alongside otters, capybaras, and turtles. Information boards are written like elementary school report cards with imagined comments from the animals themselves, making the exhibits genuinely fun rather than just informative. One tank is arranged like a cinder-block apartment building to recreate deep-sea floor conditions. Shallow open tanks allow hands-on interaction, and sea lion performances run three times daily.
