Overview

1,300-year-old hot spring resort marked by distinctive red-white two-story Romon Tower Gate at the district entrance.

This hot spring resort town near the center of Saga, dates back over 1,300 years. The distinctive red and white, two-story Romon Tower Gate marks the entrance to the hot spring district. The gate, completed in 1915, was designed by architect Kingo Tatsuno, who also designed the original Tokyo Station building. The water here is alkaline, and said to be particularly good for the skin. Nearby, the Takeo City Library, with a book shop, museum and cafe, is a must-see for fans of modern architecture.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
