At 213 meters, Takenotsuji is the highest point on the largely flat Iki.
At 213 meters, Takenotsuji is the highest point on Iki Island, and from the summit you can see the island's small bays and forested hills, the Fukaetabaru plain, the island of Tsushima, and mainland Kyushu on clear days. The peak has been strategically important for centuries. It is thought to have been part of a seventh-century smoke beacon network relaying warnings of threats from Tsushima to the mainland. During the Edo period, the summit was used to monitor foreign ships, as the shogunate tightly controlled all contact with the outside world. A road now reaches the top, and a lookout accessible by wheelchair makes the view available to everyone.
