Overview
The site of Japan's first modern coal mine, featuring a museum and early pit ruins.
The neighboring island to the famous Gunkanjima, Takashima was actually the site of Japan's first modern coal mine developed with Western technology. While much of the island is residential today, visitors can see the Hokkejii Pit ruins and a fantastic coal mining museum detailing the harsh realities of the era.
Local tips
Unlike Gunkanjima, you can freely walk around Takashima on your own, making it a great destination for self-paced explorers.
