Overview

Lakeside castle on Suwa's shores where the Takeda clan once ruled, now offering panoramic views of the mountains.

Takashima Castle in Suwa is called the floating castle because it sits on a promontory surrounded by the waters of Lake Suwa, creating the impression that it rises directly from the lake surface on misty mornings. The present structure is a 1970 reconstruction, but the stone foundations and moat layout follow the original 17th-century plan. In spring, cherry trees along the lakeside path bloom around the castle walls. The interior houses a small historical museum covering the region's feudal history. The walk from Kamisuwa Station takes about fifteen minutes, passing along the lake edge with the Alps visible on clear days.
