Overview

Castle itself is long gone, but winding moats and rolling lawns still make this park Takaoka's preferred spot to relax.

Takaoka Kojo Park occupies the grounds where Takaoka Castle once stood, built by the Maeda clan in 1609 and dismantled just six years later. While the castle itself is long gone, the original moats remain intact and are now surrounded by rolling lawns, mature trees, and walking paths that make this the most popular green space in the city. Spring brings over 1,800 cherry trees into bloom, drawing locals for hanami picnics, while autumn paints the grounds in warm reds and golds. The park also houses a small zoo, a local history museum, and several shrines, making it a relaxed spot to spend an hour or two between visits to Takaoka's Great Buddha and the historic Kanayamachi metalworking district.
