Overview

Ruins of a castle built in 1590 in a parklike setting, with a moat that uses water from the sea.

Takamatsu Castle, also called Tamamo Park, sits right next to JR Takamatsu Station and preserves ruins of a 1590 fortress distinguished by its seawater moat, one of only a handful of ocean-fed castle moats still in existence. Built by the Ikoma clan, the restored turrets and gates give a good sense of how the castle once commanded the waterfront. At the entrance, you can buy small food packets to feed the sea bream that swim in the moat, a simple pleasure that appeals to all ages. The park's pines and cherry trees in spring make it a calm morning walk before catching a ferry to Naoshima.
