Overview

An ancient shrine in a mystical cedar forest, known for nightly Kagura dance performances depicting Japanese mythology.

Takachiho Shrine serves as the parent shrine to 88 other shrines across 18 villages in the area, a role it has held since the Heian period when it was the highest-ranked shrine in what is now Miyazaki Prefecture. Twenty-three deities are worshipped across the grounds, with 16 in the main sanctuary. The shrine is also closely tied to the yokagura dance tradition, performed here for over 800 years. Kagura Hall within the grounds hosts regular performances for the public. Among the sacred trees on the grounds, two 800-year-old cedars called the Meoto Sugi stand as the most visited landmarks.
