Overview

Hillside viewpoints overlooking Japan's most photographed railway bridge in morning mist.

Three viewpoints along a hillside trail overlook the iconic arched bridge where the Tadami Line crosses a misty river gorge surrounded by mountains. A retro two-car train passes only nine times during daylight hours, creating one of Japan's most photographed railway scenes. The 'golden hour' around 9 AM, when fog rises from the Tadami River, produces images that look like watercolor paintings.

Local tips

The view from the Dai-1 Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint frames an arched railway bridge against the river valley in a single composition made famous in Japanese photography. The scene is most striking in autumn when the surrounding hillsides turn red and orange, and in spring when valley mist fills the morning. The Tadami Line runs 4 to 5 times per day; the viewpoint is accessible by car from Aizu-Wakamatsu in about 1.5 hours. The line itself passes through otherwise unreachable mountain valleys and is worth riding for the views alone.
