Sumoto Castle Ruins

Partly restored remains of a stone castle complex with 16th-century origins on a rocky crag.
Sumoto Castle ruins sit on a rocky hilltop above the city of Sumoto on Awaji Island, with partly restored stone walls and a reconstructed keep that now houses a small local history museum. The castle dates to the 16th century, built to control sea traffic between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific. A hiking trail and ropeway both provide access to the top, where views stretch across the Kii Channel toward Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula. The grounds are a popular cherry blossom spot in spring, and the panoramic views from the summit make the climb worthwhile in any season.
