Sumida Hokusai Museum

The Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo is dedicated to the life and work of Katsushika Hokusai, the legendary ukiyo-e master responsible for 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' and the '36 Views of Mount Fuji' series. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Kazuyo Sejima, the striking aluminum-clad building features angular cuts and a mirror-like facade that reflects the surrounding Sumida neighborhood where Hokusai spent most of his life. Inside, high-resolution replicas and interactive displays trace Hokusai's artistic evolution from his twenties through his final years, when he signed his work as 'The Old Man Mad About Painting.' The museum regularly rotates its collection of original woodblock prints, so each visit offers something new.
