Overview

Urban aquarium beneath Tokyo Skytree featuring jellyfish displays, penguin habitats, and a massive open-air garden tank.

Sumida Aquarium occupies the upper floors of Tokyo Skytree Town in Asakusa, with a design that emphasizes large open tanks and natural light where possible. The centrepiece is a cylindrical tank filled with Tokyo Bay species including rays and schooling fish, and a separate large tank holds the building's resident little penguins, who can be watched from multiple levels as they swim and rest. The jellyfish section is well lit and draws a crowd, and a cafe area overlooks one of the main tanks. Because the aquarium is indoor and climate controlled, it works as a reliable option on rainy days or when the heat outside is intense.
