酸ヶ湯温泉
Historic 1684 bathhouse with a cypress hall large enough for a thousand bathers.
Built in 1684 at the foot of Mount Hakkoda, this historic bathhouse features the legendary Hiba Sennin Buro, a cypress-wood hall large enough for a thousand bathers. One of Japan's last mixed-gender onsen, the acidic sulfur waters are prized for healing skin ailments. In winter, snow walls tower several meters high around the wooden building.
One of Japan's designated healing hot springs (kankou onsen), with recorded use since the late Edo period. The Hiba Senninburo bathing hall is Japan's largest surviving traditional wooden communal bathhouse, covering the equivalent of about 160 tatami mats with four interconnected pools at different temperatures. The water is sulfur-rich and will tarnish silver jewelry. Accommodation books out months in advance for autumn. Access is by Aomori-to-Hakkoda Ropeway bus from Aomori Station (1.5 hours).
