Welcome to the Hayasaki Coast.
The Hayasaki Coast walk along the southern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula traces the oldest layers of the region's volcanic history. Around 4.3 million years ago, an underwater volcano began building the peninsula. As it broke the surface, early eruptions mixed with seawater to produce fine yellow volcanic ash; later lava flows cooled into the large reddish-brown basalt rocks visible along the shore today. The narrow Hayasaki Strait between the peninsula and Shimoshima Island creates conditions favorable for fishing. Mineral-rich volcanic soil supports crops like onions and potatoes, and volcanic stone cut from the outcrops has long been shaped into walls and terraces. The path forms part of both the Kyushu Nature Trail and Kyushu Olle Trail.
