Stone Church - Uchimura Kanzo Memorial
landmark
石の教会 内村鑑三記念堂
A breathtaking organic church built of stone arches into a hillside, blending architecture with the surrounding forest.
Designed by American architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, the Stone Church is built directly into a forested hillside, with alternating arcs of stone and glass creating a cave-like interior flooded with natural light. Built as a memorial to Christian thinker Uchimura Kanzo, the structure follows organic architecture principles, no two arcs are the same, and the building appears to grow from the earth itself. Water flows through the interior, and the surrounding birch forest adds to the ethereal atmosphere.
The church closes for weddings (often weekends). Call ahead to confirm it's open. Combine with the nearby Harunire Terrace for lunch at one of its streamside restaurants.
