Besides an abundance of hot springs, Hakone has many “cold” springs that provide easy access to the area’s abundant groundwater reserves.
Hakone is known for its hot springs, but the area also has several natural cold springs with centuries of use behind them. Five are easy to visit. In Hakone-Yumoto, the Shugakudo spring sits beside a sake shop; Hakusan Shrine uses spring water in its temizu purification basin; and the Tamadare spring at Tenseien hotel is said to bring long life to those who drink it. In Kiga, the Eiju spring flows in front of Hanakotoba, a wagashi sweet shop that bottles and sells the water. At Hakone Shrine, the Ryujin spring pours through the mouths of nine dragon statues into a basin where you can fill a bottle on the spot.
