總持寺
Head temple of Soto Zen Buddhism with active monastic training and public zazen.
One of the two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism, with a vast complex of training halls, gardens, and a meditation practice open to the public. Over 200 monks train here in the traditional monastic curriculum, and the morning zazen sessions welcome visitors.
Free zazen meditation sessions are held Saturday mornings (check schedule). The 400-meter-long approach through the grounds is lined with moss-covered graves of samurai families.
