About twenty minutes by car from the Akankohan Eco Museum Center on National Route 241, Sogakudai Observatory sits at 740 meters altitude and offers simultaneous views of both Mt. Oakan and Mt. Meakan. In Japanese, the pair are named as husband and wife, standing side by side across the landscape. The observatory is surrounded by a forest of Yezo spruce and Erman's birch. Views are clearest from October through March when the foliage thins and both mountains stand out sharply against winter skies. It is a quick stop that rewards anyone driving the highway between Akan and Teshikaga.
Local tips
Tripod and wide-angle lens recommended for photographers. Phone panorama mode works surprisingly well too.
