Site of Matsubara Okoyasumijo

Along the Yogawa-michi, an alternate route used when the Nakasendo was closed by landslides or floods, three designated rest stops were maintained for travelers of rank. This one at Matsubara was chosen for its pleasant setting beside a burbling stream, a deliberate choice described in documents from 1731. Trees were cleared and ground leveled for temporary structures where lords and their retinues could pause during the journey. The other two stops, at Ne-no-Ue and Momo-no-Ki passes, would have offered mountain views. Today the site is a quiet point along the historic trail, easy to miss without knowing what once happened here.
