Kaneda Fort on Tsushima Island was built in 663 as Japan's front-line defense against an expected Tang Chinese and Silla invasion, following those forces' defeat of Yamato ally Baekje. Baekje engineers who fled to Japan constructed the fort using Korean-style techniques, raising stone walls up to six meters high across the 276-meter summit of Mt. Jo. On clear days the Korean Peninsula is visible from the top. The anticipated invasion never came, and the fort lost its military purpose within decades. A 2.4-kilometer hiking trail passes several surviving wall sections on the way to the summit.
The surrounding moat and gardens are part of the experience. Don't just see the keep. Budget time for the full grounds.
