Shukugawa River Cherry Blossoms

夙川公園

4.3Est. 90Nishinomiya, Kansai

Overview

When the blossoms bloom, this Hyogo corner comes alive with some of the best hanami parties in Japan.

About 1,660 cherry trees line a 2.8-kilometer stretch of the Shukugawa River, close to Nishinomiya between Osaka and Kobe. Peak bloom typically falls in late March to early April, when the trees form a canopy over the riverside paths and local families spread blankets along the grassy banks. Small bridges crossing the river give good angles for photographing the tree-lined water. The atmosphere is that of neighborhood hanami rather than a tourist event, with residents bringing their own food and staying through the afternoon. Cafes and bakeries near Shukugawa Station are good for picking up provisions before settling in along the water.
