Overview

The Shoryuji Castle Park in Nagaokakyo is built on the site of a castle that was linked to several historical figures and important events in sixteenth-century Japan.

Shoryuji Castle in Nagaokakyo is where Hosokawa Tadaoki and Tama, later known by her Christian name Gracia, were married in 1578. In 1582, Tama's father Akechi Mitsuhide assassinated Oda Nobunaga and fled to Shoryuji, where he was killed shortly after. Gracia converted to Christianity while in Osaka, and in 1600 chose to be killed by her retainer rather than be taken hostage or commit suicide, which her faith forbade. The castle site is now a public park with a moat, koi pond, and statues of the couple. An exhibition in the keep-like administration building includes a video about Gracia's life with English subtitles.
