Shorin-in Temple

A 1013 Tendai temple founded by the monk Jakugen, the historical anchor of shomyo Buddhist chant in Japan. The main hall, rebuilt in 1777, houses the Amida Buddha statue that gave the temple its other name, Mondo no Tera (Temple of the Question and Answer), referring to a famous 1186 doctrinal debate held here. The bell in the courtyard is rung at services and is regarded as one of the resonant bells of Ohara.
