Overview

Shomyo Falls drops 350 meters in four tiers over a sheer volcanic cliff, making it the tallest uninterrupted waterfall in Japan. The water originates on the slopes of Mt. Tate, and when snowmelt peaks in April and May, a second cascade called Hannoki Falls appears to the right. The name means "chanting scripture," given because the resonance of the falling water reminded people of monks reciting sutras. A 30-minute walk from the bus parking area follows the river with constant views of the cliff. Rainbows sometimes appear in the spray, most often in mid-afternoon.
