松下村塾
Modest wooden schoolhouse that nurtured the leaders of the Meiji Restoration.
A tiny, unassuming wooden schoolhouse that profoundly changed the course of Japanese history. Here, Yoshida Shoin educated many of the young leaders who would go on to drive the Meiji Restoration. The surrounding historic town of Hagi provides excellent context for their revolutionary ideas.
The building is located within the grounds of the Shoin Shrine, where you can buy umbrellas that reveal fortunes when wet.
