Shoin-jinja

This shrine honors Yoshida Shoin (1830-1859), the radical Choshu scholar whose teachings directly inspired the leaders who overthrew the shogunate and launched the Meiji Restoration. The grounds are modest but historically charged, adjacent to the shrine sits the tiny Shokasonjuku Academy where Shoin taught future prime ministers and revolutionaries in a room barely large enough for a dozen students. The shrine's treasure hall displays letters, calligraphy, and personal effects. Visiting the shrine and academy together gives real texture to understanding how Japan's modern transformation began.
