The portraits of 36 Chinese poets line the main hall, but the dry sand garden is the real draw. From the tatami veranda, listen for the rhythmic clack of the shishi-odoshi deer scarer. Peak viewing is the May azalea bloom and autumn, but a quiet winter morning also rewards.
