Overview
A forested hilltop with the iconic view of Sakurajima volcano rising above Kagoshima Bay, especially at dawn.
This 107m hill in central Kagoshima was the last stand of Saigo Takamori in the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion. The summit observatory offers the classic Kagoshima view, the city spread below with Sakurajima smoking across the bay. A nature trail through subtropical forest connects the summit to the city below.
Local tips
Come at dawn. The sunrise behind Sakurajima silhouettes the volcano in orange and pink. The walking trail down takes 20 minutes to Terukuni Shrine.
