Shirotomachi Museum
犬山市文化史料館
Overview
The city of Inuyama is one of the few places in Japan where the legacy of a castle town has been so well preserved.
This museum in Inuyama keeps alive the history of a castle town that survived the Meiji-era demolitions that destroyed roughly 2,000 castles across Japan. Its centerpiece is a large diorama of the town as it appeared around 1840, showing walls, gates, and buildings that no longer stand alongside streets that still follow the same grid today. One exhibition room displays treasures passed down through the Naruse family, longtime owners of Inuyama Castle. Another covers the daily life and folk traditions of ordinary townspeople. Both rooms rotate their displays periodically.
