Shiretoko World Heritage Rusa Field House is a visitor and education center in a modern timber building facing the Nemuro Strait.
This timber visitor center on the shore of the Nemuro Strait is the practical starting point for anyone heading into the Shiretoko backcountry. Staff update a board near the entrance with current weather conditions and bear sightings, and offer short geology workshops for hikers and kayakers. Maps detail local geological features, and taxidermy introduces the wildlife of the peninsula. Upstairs, telescopes and binoculars face the water for spotting whales, dolphins, killer whales, and eagles. Bear deterrent spray and bear-resistant food containers are available to rent. The center operates May through October and is closed during the long Shiretoko winter, located about 20 minutes drive up the coast from central Rausu.
