白山媛神社
Teradomari was once a prosperous port town frequently visited by kitamaebune (north-bound ships).
Shirayamahime Shrine in the old port town of Teradomari holds one of Japan's most significant collections of funa-ema, votive tablets dedicated by sailors and shipowners praying for safe passage. The 52 tablets in the collection span the period 1774 to 1889, each painted with a specific kitamaebune merchant ship, its name, crew, and measurements. The shrine was the most popular place in Teradomari for these offerings because its deities were associated with maritime safety. Roughly half the collection is on display at any time. Viewing the Funa-ema Storage Hall requires a phone reservation in advance; admission is 300 yen for adults.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
