Shirakabe Dozo Street
白壁土蔵街
Overview
White-plastered Edo-era storehouses along a quiet canal, once sake warehouses now housing antique shops and galleries.
Running parallel to the famous Sanmachi Suji but receiving a fraction of the foot traffic, Shirakabe Dozo Street features white-plastered storehouses reflected in a narrow canal. These kura once stored sake, rice, and merchant goods during Takayama's prosperous Edo period. Today they house antique dealers, small galleries, and artisan workshops. The contrast of white walls against dark timber frames and the gentle sound of water creates one of Takayama's most photogenic corners.
Local tips
Come at golden hour for the best photographs. The white walls glow amber and the canal reflections are sharpest when the light is low and oblique.
