Shiraito Waterfall
白糸の滝
Overview
Delicate curtains of water cascade over moss-covered rock in a Karuizawa forest, creating a gentle 3-meter falls.
Shiraito Falls sits on the outskirts of Karuizawa, and the walk from the parking area through a forested path takes about fifteen minutes. The waterfall itself spreads in a wide, thin arc rather than dropping in a single column, with snowmelt and groundwater seeping through a basalt ledge across a span of about 70 meters. John Lennon reportedly visited here during his years in Karuizawa, which became a favorite retreat for him and Yoko Ono. The surrounding forest keeps the site cool even in summer. Combine with a visit to Sengataki Falls a short walk away for a full loop of roughly an hour.
