Shirahige Waterfall
白ひげの滝
4.4Est. 20Furano, Hokkaido
Overview
Also known as the "White Beard Waterfall," this cascading water turns cobalt blue in the basin.
Underground hot spring water bursts through cracks in the volcanic rock face, cascading 30 meters into the electric-blue waters of the Biei River below. The mineral content that gives nearby Blue Pond its famous color creates the same cobalt hue in this waterfall's basin. A viewing bridge provides the perfect vantage point, while winter transforms the falls into a partially frozen spectacle illuminated at night.
