Shirahama Swimming Beach is just down the coast from Osuka Beach.
Shirahama is on the Ministry of the Environment's list of top 100 swimming beaches, and unlike some of its neighbors along the Tanesashi Coast, it is safe for swimmers. The sand is notably pale due to low iron content, a contrast to the iron-rich soils elsewhere in the Nambu region that gave rise to Nambu tekki, a regional ironworking tradition. Public showers, restrooms, and food stalls are available from mid-July to late August. Looking north from the beach gives an unobstructed view along the coast toward the Ashigezaki Observatory. Near the southern end, a small boat on display survived the 2011 tsunami.
