Overview

Centuries-old thatched-roof ryokan featuring a powerful waterfall bath.

Shirabu Onsen is a historic village that once served as a hidden retreat for the Uesugi clan samurai. Nishiya is one of the original thatched-roof inns that has survived into the modern era. The bathing area is famous for its 'Utase-yu,' where three massive streams of hot spring water pour down from the ceiling into a deep stone pool. The water is a clear sulfur spring, and the facility maintains a high-pressure flow that provides a natural water massage. The interior is made of dark, weathered stone and wood, creating a somber and powerful atmosphere. It is one of the best examples of a 'samurai-era' onsen experience remaining in Tohoku.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
