Shinyakushiji
temple
新薬師寺
Inside the original Nara-period main hall, twelve clay warrior statues stand guard, each over two meters tall in fierce poses. The temple’s location in a quiet neighborhood, away from the main park sites, means you can view the sculptures without the usual crowds. A calm Yakushi Nyorai sits at the center.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
