Overview
Historic temple in Aichi featuring traditional Buddhist architecture.
Shinshū Ōtani-ha Nagoya-Betsuin, commonly called Higashi Betsuin, is a large Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple in central Nagoya built in the early 17th century. The main hall and its sweeping tiled roof are visible from the streets around Higashi Betsuin Station, and the broad stone courtyard in front accommodates the crowds that attend seasonal services and events. The interior of the main hall is dark-timbered and ornate, with gilded altar fittings typical of Jodo Shinshu style. The temple holds regular public events including early morning services and seasonal ceremonies open to visitors. It's within walking distance of Nagoya's shopping and castle districts, and the contrast between the old temple compound and the surrounding city is immediate.
Local tips
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
