Tsutenkaku Tower stands tall amid the vibrant bygone-days atmosphere, a treasured cultural icon of Osaka.
Osaka's most colorfully nostalgic neighborhood, a vibrant entertainment district created in 1912 that retains the retro atmosphere of mid-20th century Japan with its neon signs, game arcades, and packed food stalls. At its center stands Tsutenkaku Tower, a beloved 103-meter landmark modeled partly on the Eiffel Tower, whose observation deck offers panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape. The streets below are famous for kushikatsu, deep-fried skewered meats and vegetables served at dozens of no-frills restaurants where the golden rule, posted everywhere, is 'no double-dipping' in the communal sauce. The area's slightly rough-around-the-edges charm, complete with puffer fish lanterns, shogi parlors, and discount shops, offers an authentic slice of working-class Osaka culture far removed from the polished commercial districts.
The kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) here are cheap and delicious. Rule: never double-dip in the communal sauce.
