Shinkyo Bridge

This vermilion-painted arched bridge crosses the Yorimo River on the main approach to Usa Jingu Shrine, and its bright color is said to ward off evil. The railings are decorated with mitsudomoe crests, a swirling three-comma pattern common at shrines dedicated to the deity Hachiman. The first permanent version was built in 1910, replacing temporary wooden bridges that were erected each time an imperial messenger was dispatched to the shrine. A plain cream-colored bridge nearby handles vehicle traffic, and the contrast between the two makes the spiritual role of Shinkyo clear: it leads directly to the great Otorii gate marking the threshold of the sacred grounds.
