Shinhotaka Ropeway
landmark
新穂高ロープウェイ
Starting point for a ropeway up the side of a mountain, with a rooftop observatory & a gift shop.
The Shinhotaka Ropeway carries passengers in two stages from Shinhotaka Onsen up to 2,156 meters, where the observation deck overlooks Mt. Yarigatake, Mt. Nishihotakadake, and other Northern Alps peaks. The second gondola is Japan's only two-story ropeway car, designed so more passengers get window views of the alpine landscape. There is also a foot bath at the middle transit point where you can soak your feet while watching gondolas come and go. A 2.3-kilometer nature trail near the top runs as a snowshoe tour in winter.
