Overview
Modern museum with accessible exhibits on Izumo region history where one-third of ancient Japanese myths are set.
A modern, spacious museum near Izumo Taisha that brings the mythology and prehistory of the Izumo region to life, fitting, since roughly one-third of Japan's ancient creation myths are set in this area. Exhibits cover everything from massive bronze bell hoards to scale models of the Grand Shrine's original towering structure. The presentation is accessible and well-designed even for non-Japanese speakers, with plenty of visual storytelling. The building itself, with its clean contemporary lines, makes an interesting architectural contrast with the ancient shrine nearby.
