Shigain Monzeki
temple
滋賀院門跡
Former imperial convent at Mount Hiei's foot, featuring elegant shoin-style rooms and a garden by Kobori Enshu.
Shigain Monzeki in Otsu is one of the few temples in Japan that served as an imperial residence, and its interiors reflect that history directly. The Shoin-style halls contain sliding door paintings by Kano school artists commissioned for imperial visits, and the formal garden is composed with the precision typical of high-status Edo-period design. Entry is by guided tour, which moves through rooms that are otherwise closed to visitors. The temple sits close to Enryaku-ji on the Hiei ridge, making it a natural addition to a day exploring the Shiga side of the mountain. Advance booking is sometimes required in busy seasons.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
