渋温泉街1 [渋温泉]
Historic hot spring town with traditional atmosphere and preserved Edo-era buildings near Yudanaka Onsen.
Shibu Onsen in Yamanouchi has been a bathing destination for over 1,350 years, with nine public bathhouses scattered through its cobblestone streets. Guests staying at any of the local ryokan can attempt the kyuto meguri, a tour of all nine baths, each fed by a different spring source and offering distinct water qualities from murky iron-rich brown to clear mineral-flecked water. Collecting a stamp at each bath and finishing with a prayer at Shibu-Takayakushi Temple is said to bring longevity and ward off ill fortune. The 260-year-old Kanaguya ryokan, lit up at night, is widely cited as one of the visual inspirations for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
