Shakotan Peninsula
nature
積丹半島
Rugged peninsula with dramatic sea cliffs and impossibly blue waters, nicknamed Shakotan Blue for its vivid colors.
Shakotan Peninsula juts out into the Sea of Japan from Hokkaido's western coast, about two hours from Sapporo. The water here is unusually clear and deep blue, known locally as Shakotan Blue, fed by cold currents that keep it vivid even on overcast days. The peninsula's rocky headlands include Cape Kamui, a 20-minute walk from the parking area to a lighthouse with views along the cliffs in both directions. Sea urchin pulled fresh from these waters is the local specialty, served in small seaside restaurants along the coast road from June through August. The drive along the coast is scenic in both directions.
