Overview

The wide path leading from the road to the main shrines of Sumiyoshi Taisha is called the Shōmen Sandō.

Walking the Shomen Sando, the broad path leading to the main shrines of Sumiyoshi Taisha, is considered the first act of worship at the shrine. The approach marks the shift from the everyday to the sacred. Sumiyoshi Taisha appears in The Tale of Genji, written around 1,000 years ago, when Lady Murasaki Shikibu described Prince Genji giving thanks at the shrine during a period of exile. She praised the pine trees along the shore through which white-capped waves were once visible. The shoreline has since moved westward through centuries of silt buildup and land reclamation, but the shrine's connection to the sea runs through its founding deities.
