Overview

A wagashi confectioner's cafe inside a renovated Edo-era storehouse, serving traditional Japanese sweets and matcha since 1860.

Founded by a samurai from Akita domain in 1860, Senshuan Sohonke is Hakodate's most venerable Japanese confectioner. In 2024, the historic storehouse was beautifully renovated by architect Jo Nagasaka into an eat-in cafe. Their dorayaki, served since the 1920s, uses house-made red bean paste that takes three days to prepare. The minimalist renovation preserves the stone walls while adding warm modern lighting.

Local tips

Order the seasonal namagashi (fresh confection) with matcha. The designs change every two weeks and reflect whatever's blooming on Mount Hakodate.
