Senjojiki

Dramatic stretch of coastal rock shelf in Shirahama where millennia of Pacific Ocean waves have sculpted the sandstone into layered, almost geometric formations that look like a giant staircase descending into the sea. The name translates to "a thousand tatami mats," describing the vast flat expanse of eroded rock that extends outward from the cliff edge. Sunset is the most dramatic time to visit, when the low light casts long shadows across the textured stone and the ocean glows amber. The site is free to access and sits along the Shirahama coast road, making it easy to combine with a visit to nearby Sandanbeki cliffs or the town's famous white sand beach.
